Elephant Caves
Shiva Caves (Jogai Mandapa; Hattikhana) are Hindu caves located in Ambajogai, District Beed, Maharashtra state. The entire cave was dug into the hill and carved into the rocks during the reign of King Udayaditya (reign: 1060 to 1087 AD) of the Paramara dynasty, then known as the Malwa Province. The cave contains Hindu artefacts depicting scenes from Hindu Puranas and featuring Shiva, Nandi, Ganesha and other gods and goddesses.
According to the Archaeological Survey of India, the sculptures and inscriptions in these caves are “the best extant examples of Indian art”.
These Shiva caves are included in the archaeological heritage sites of the Archaeological Survey Department. The site is listed as a protected monument in the “List of Protected Monuments in the State of Maharashtra” under the Maharashtra Antiquities and Archaeological Sites and Existence Act, 1960, under the Maharashtra Archeology Department.
